Workplace Health and Safety QLD has just released approval for Simpatico Safety Training to run interactive, online Health and Safety Representative training for you to access while you are working from home or at your workplace.
This enables elected HSRs to receive their mandated training from the safety of their home office or workplace. This also breaks the distance barrier for HSRs working in regional areas. We will work with employers and workers to ensure that they have the resources required to access the training via a virtual classroom on Zoom.
Zoom allows people to interact with the trainer and be engaged within the learning environment with other learners in a similar manner as a face-to-face course. We ensure our class numbers are capped to allow each participant the time to interact with others and to learn at their own pace. We appreciate that the online training environment may be unfamiliar to some, so we shall provide instructions and a “Zoom 101” tutorial upon enrolment to ensure that no one falls behind.
As we have recently advised, changes to the WHS Act have impacted training requirements for Health and Safety Reps, i.e. it is mandatory for newly elected HSRs to be trained within 3 months of election, and mandatory refresher training is to be undertaken every 3 years (previously annually).

We have found that the annual refresher training allowed HSRs to get together and encourage each other by talking about wins. The change to a 3-yearly refresher means that we do not get to see HSRs as often to talk about role. We are looking at some dates for a virtual HSR Breakfast of Champions… More details to follow.
